چکیده

By MARGARET M. LAWRENCE, M.D.,* AND CARL R. FEIND, M.D.t Neu’ York City T HE need for exact knowledge of the normal vestibular response of young subjects to artificial stimulation became apparent to one of the authors while testing a group of patients with H. influenzae meningitis who had been treated with streptomycin. In addition to its importance in detecting vestibular damage caused by streptomycin, such information is of value in examining the cranial nerves of the newborn infant to identify congenital defects and birth injuries, and at later ages to confirm the presence of postnatal injuries and diseases. To date, evaluation of the normal vestibular function in the newborn and young infant has been inadequate. This study is an attempt to perfect a technic or appraise the results of a simple vestibular test in infants and children. This report concerns the vestibular response of 64 newborn infants to various stimuli. These infants were all healthy and were considered normal. Their ages varied from 3 hours to 10 days, and their weights between 2.2 to 4.0 kg. Sex and cultural background were disregarded. Caloric tests proved unsatisfactory at this age, because of smallness of the external canal and apparent discomfort to the infants manifested by their crying and tight closing of eyes, which made observation of nystagmus impossible. The following gives methods and results of rotation testing.

A Model of the Respiratory System in the Newborn Infant

A dynamic mathematical model is presented which successfully simulates the respiratory control system of the newborn infant in different physiological conditions. The primary objective in constructing this model has been to provide a simulation aid in the investigation of maturation of the respiratory system, and the respiratory disorders during the newborn period, without the need for invasive...

A Study on Physical Factors Stimulating the Semicircular Canals Receptors (Cupola)

SUMMARY Although sciences and techniques have been significantly developed, many patients are still suffering from diagnostic and therapeutic problems of vestibular system, specially vertigo. Perhaps, these problems are not solved yet mostly because the neurophysiology of vestibular system and the stimulation mechanisms of the receptors are not known. This difficulty, intum, causes some a mbig...

The effects of the rotatory maneuver on ENG results of patients with directional preponderance and a history of peripheral vestibular vertigo

This study was performed following favorable results from a previous research, which studied the response of acute vestibular patients to the rotatory maneuver, to investigate the effects of the rotatory maneuver on chronic vestibular patients. In an attempt to normalize the patient’s directional preponderance (DP), and hence their vestibular symptoms, the study was designed to reduce the imbal...

Effects of prenatal spaceflight on vestibular responses in neonatal rats.

Ten pregnant Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) were flown for 11 days on board the NASA space shuttle from gestational day 9 (launch) until gestational day 20 (landing) of the rats' 22-day pregnancy. After the birth of the pups, vestibular responses were analyzed from postnatal day (P) 0 until P5. In the first test, P0 neonates were supported on a platform in a side-lying position. Skyward head m...
